Monday, 9/9/13: Tolkien and Onward

* Opening Grammar Correction
  • Fix the example below.
This example is from the opening of Ch. III, "A Short Rest":

     They did not sing or tell stories that day even thou the whether
     improved nor the next day nor the day after they had begun to
     feel that dangre was not far away on iether side.  They camped
     under the stars and their horses had more to eat than they had
     for their was plenty of grass but there was not
     much in they're bags even with what they had got from the
     trolls. (Tolkien 55)

This also shows you how a long quotation works in MLA.  Notice that there are no quotation marks (the colon and 1" indentation mark off a long quote).  Notice that the parenthetical citation comes after the period (it's always before the period otherwise).

Some think Rivendell was modeled after the Lauterbrunnental valley in Switzerland (which Tolkien visited in 1911).  Field trip, anyone?  This is Tolkien's own artwork.
* Check nails, terms and vocabulary.  Copy them into your binder, and look up words that you do not know.
