Block Day: Week 4; Antigone, MLA, Writing

1. Review J11: Art-tigone. Schwager's class: Comment to this post naming and briefly explaining your art and Antigone tie.

2. It's Greek to Me...and Thee: Finish the Video.

3. Questions? Remember, as you head into the coming essay, you should choose to use the red literature book (easier to read), or the Storr version of Antigone (free, old-school, Harvard World Classics version). The Storr edition is titled Oedipus Trilogy and may be found in iBooks or Guntenberg for free. Additionally, there is a web-based, footnoted version that is exceptionally readable, translated by Canadian scholar Ian Johnston, available here.

4. Grammar: MLA:
* Many of you have seen this before in previous years. Review Researched Writing: 57, 57a, 58, 58a, 58b (Researched Writing is the penultimate or second-to-last section). The part to pay the closest attention to is 58b. It will tell you to "click here." Do so and look over the sample essay. It is in perfect MLA form. Keep a copy of it handy on your computer so that you can quickly check to see if your heading, margins, citations, and works cited look the same.
* Planning and Paragraphs. The fist section (or roughly 100 pages) of the grammar books treats essay formation. For today, let's look over pages 1-30 focusing on purpose and notes. First, on page 11, note that there are many distinct purposes for essays. A summary (overview) is not at all like an analysis (sharp focus on a particular passage or idea). Be sure you know your purpose as you engage a prompt. Secondly, as you know your purpose, you can take notes as you reread sections for comparison. Let's see what advice Bedford has to offer us in note taking (pages 16-30).

5. Writing: THE: Antigone
A. Prompt: Compare and contrast the kingships—and sin or hubris—of Creon and David. How do the prophetic showdowns in each story differ? What about each king’s response to the prophetic accusation? Paying specific attention to the divine retribution in each story, consider the theological differences between the two texts. What is each author teaching as a fundamental truth about the nature of God/the gods? To read about David, see 2 Samuel 11-12:25 and also Psalm 51. Be sure to quote from Antigone and the Bible to support your case.

Note, you are not writing this essay today or this weekend. We are just reviewing the coming work together. We will be working through the phases of writing more patiently this time to set us on track for better writing over the course of the year. All you need to do is keep up with the smaller classwork and homework goals given daily. We will also be reviewing for the PSAT next week, which will slow us considerably; therefore, no heart attacks are allowed this time through.

B. Read the Bible Passages Together: 2 Samuel 11-12:25, Psalm 51.

HW: In your notes, take down comparison thoughts between Antigone and the Bible passages.

I choose the song "Amazing Grace" because it is not only a nice loving song it is a sting song that has meaning. This is just like Antigone because Antigone is loving and nice but when it comes to her family or when she has to be she will be strong. Amazing grace is a soft warming song but has a deep meaning of strength and power. Antigone new what she did was against the law but it was the right thing to do and she did it any way. Then when she was confronted
about it and asked if she did do it she was strong and said yes and was ready
to face the consequences. That's the same strength I see in Amazing Grace as I
do Antigone.

"The ache I feel inside is where the life has left your eyes, I'm alone for our last goodbye, but you're free." Antigone doesn't get to say goodbye to her brother before he dies.

In popular culture, the situations happen actually quite often. For instance, peer pressure. Like Antigone, you can choose to resist it. She does the thing she feels is right in her culture.

I think that the song how he loves relates to Antigone because it talks about how god would do anything for us and how antiogone would do anything for her brother.

Journal  11:

There are 3 songs that I relate to Antigones dilemma and that is. Awake my soul by Mumford and sons. The second is face down by red jump suit apparatus. And finally there is Gods gonna cut you down by Johnny Cash. They  all have their own individual aspects that relate to the dilemma.
Awake my soul, the first two verses are relatable in a few ways.

How fickle my heart and how woozy my eyes
I struggle to find any truth in your lies.
And now my heart stumbles on things I don't know
This weakness I feel I must finally show
Lend me your hand and we'll conquer them all
But lend me your heart and I'll just let you fall
Lend me your eyes I can change what you see
But your soul you must keep, totally free
This is a reminder of her thinking to herself and also talking to Creon in her thoughts. Telling herself of her own mistakes.
Face down, is similar in one interesting aspect.

Do you feel like a man when you push her around?
Do you feel better now as she falls to the ground?
Well I'll tell you my friend, one day this world's going to end
as your lies crumble down, a new life she has found.

A pebble in the water makes a ripple effect
every action in this world will bear a consequence
If you wade around forever, you will surely drown
I see what's going down.

That is if you think of the song as Hammen telling his father of his wrong doings. This song can be exactly the same as the dilemma.
And finally the last song is Gods gonna cut you down. That is gods gonna cut you down but Not the true God.

Go tell that long tongue liar
Go and tell that midnight rider
Tell the rambler, the gambler, the back biter
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down
Tell 'em that God's gonna cut 'em down

You can run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Run on for a long time
Sooner or later God'll cut you down
Sooner or later God'll cut you down
This aspect is relating to Antigone once she is in the tomb. Just screaming to them telling her god to curse them. Which is exactly like this song.

I think Antigone relates to the song Coming Home because she "wants the rain to wash away all the pain of yesterday." She wants all the pain of losing her brothers to be gone, and forgotten.

I think the song Homeboy by Eric Church relates to Antigone. It relates to Antigone because the boy gets put a place where he will never see the sun rise or set again.

The piece of artwork I found that seamed to be relate to Antigone was the famous piece of work named scream. It relates to the sad story of Antigone in a way because of the expression she has of terror, she is afraid of something that is happening or going to happen to her, in antigone's case she was condemned to be buried alive, with out even the light of day. She showed no fear but, when she was sealed in the cave, which would soon be her tomb, she must have been afraid in a sense, I think the painting showed what she felt  on the inside, but she suppressed that feeling. Even when the entire city disagreed with Creon's decision and his wise prophet, he still buried her.

If I Die Young

The song, If I Die Young is very similar to the story of Antigone. The song talks about dying young and how she wants to be remembered. Antigone's similar to the song because of the obvious fact that Antigone is very young. In the song, she wants people to remember her and remember good memories of her. That's the same thing with Antigone because people are going to remember her as a brave and strong woman who never gave up. She was stubborn, but in a good way so that she could give her father a proper burial. At the very end of the song it says that when your dead, people start listening. Thats a powerful line in the song because it's really true and happens all the time. I think people will wake up now because of Antigone's death. Now they will see the bigger picture and they will open their eyes; especially Creon.

In the song this love this hate by Hollywood undead the singer says "In a time of need only few can see what's wrong millions tend to crawl only those who chose can make it through this all. Only few can sing like lions 'cause we sing until we're gone and we got each others backs until we are back were we belong." Antigone is one of the few who can see that Creon is wrong and does something about it. She chose get rid of her own life in order to try and save her brother in the afterlife. She was the lion "singing" about creon's wrong doings having her brothers back until she was caught and sentenced to death. She wasnt doing anything wrong nut she wasnt going to let her brother suffer so she decided to try and save him. When she was discovered by the guards they chose to crawl instead of being the lion and they did Creon's bidding. She was sentenced ton death for whatbshe did and it wasn't right.

A song by Eminem called Stan. It relates to Antigone because in the song the person named Stan kills himself a the end and Mr. Eminem commemorates Stan by making a song on him. This relates to Antigone because Antigone honors the dead by burying her brother even though she knew hat she would die is she did. This apples to Eminem because if the song was bad would career would have ended and no one would be listening to Eminem anymore but it wasn't so it's all good.

The song I choose that I thought related to Antigone was the song "Rebellion" by Acrade Fire, because the song Rebellion talks about people being rebellious against other people, whicth is what Antigone did to the King.

"Esther before Ahasuerus" by Artemisia Gentileschi. The image is in Western Society Advance Placement European History, Chapter 13. The dilemma is similar between Esther and Antigone.

I think the storynline of hamlet is similar to story Antigone. How they are depressed with death of family, the death of family is because of they fought to be a king. Also they are both in love with the child of king, the mutual enemies.

I think that Antigone reminds me of the song "Burn" by Usher because of the lyrics, "gotta let it burn, gotta let it burn, let it burn."

I choose The Antigone's poem by William Butler Yeats because it shows the Antegone's dilemma and her feeling. She feels sorrowful of her faith and for brothers. This poem explains her surroundings and environments in the cold cave. Moreover, it shows her longing of family, friends, city, and her lover.
